2019 September Newsletter

Friday, August 30, 2019 Change of Venue

Due to an unexpected church event, Friday’s game will be held in the Ministry Center. This won’t be any problem for us since our Friday summer games have fewer than eight tables and the Ministry Center can easily hold that number with no crowding.  Many thanks to Fay and Elliott Myers and our other Wednesday players who helped organize our bidding boxes and equipment for the move.

Labor Day Party

Players, Spouses, and Significant Others are all invited to attend a Labor Day Party after the game (about 4:20) on Monday, September 2 at our regular location in the Spirit Center. There will be pizza, Greek salad, and dessert. Bring bottles of vino or soda to share. Please sign up on Friday (or send an email back to me) so we know how many pizzas to order.

Storm Worries

If we have to cancel the game on Monday due to the weather, we will have this party on Friday, September 6.

September Club Championship Game

After all the special extra point games of the past two months, September will be a very quiet time.  There will be only one game where extra points will be awarded.  That will be on Wednesday, September 18.  Don’t miss it!

2019 August Newsletter

It is definitely too hot to do anything outside, but inside with the A.C. on we can enjoy Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons in cool comfort. In fact sometimes it is too cool. Men don’t seem to mind, but women do. I stuff a long sleeve blouse into my bag for when I am sitting under the A.C. vents.

Bridge in Naples is alive and well. July was a great month for earning extra points at the Bridge Deck Club with six North American qualifying pair games and one club championship game all with no extra fee. August will also have lots of extra point games without any extra costs to our loyal summertime players. The extra ACBL fees will come out of the club’s bank account.

Silver Point STaC Games

There will be three Sectional Tournament at Clubs days where you can acquire silver points: August 5, August 7, and August 9.

Club Championship game will be on Friday, August 16, 2019

North American Pair Games

There will be three days where you can qualify to proceed to the next level and eventually qualify to play in the National Tournament: August 19, August 21, and August 23. Club level games award extra masterpoints that are half red and half black points. You know that you have qualified when, after the game, you see a “Q” on the final result page.

Director, Please

Don’t forget to make the opening lead face down. Why give the Declarer those infamous 5 choices.

  • Declarer can accept the lead and become the dummy.
  • Declarer can accept the lead and see the dummy prior to playing to the first trick.
  • Declarer can refuse the lead and require the proper opening leader to lead that suit. (The incorrect opening lead will be picked up and put away.)
  • Declarer can refuse the lead and require the proper opening leader not to lead that suit for as long as he retains the lead. (The incorrect opening lead will be picked up.)
  • Declarer can refuse the lead and allow the proper opening leader to lead anything he chooses; the original lead becomes a penalty card that stays on the table and must be played at the first legal opportunity.

The last three of these options are also given if, during the play of the game, there is a defensive lead out of turn.
