October / November 2014 Newsletter

Welcome back to Bridge Deck and thanks to our year-round members continuing to play during the summer.  Our tables in play are increasing as our snowbirds begin returning to "Paradise."

Our Club Manager for the past 4 1/2 years, Wayne Goodrich, resigned effective July 31.  George Solomon was appointed acting manager until a quorum of the Board of Governors could be assembled.  The board met October 17 and approved George as our new Club Manager. THANKS TO WAYNE FOR ALL THE WORK HE HAS DONE DURING HIS TENURE.  He is not going away and will be helping behind the scenes and will be at the bridge table as time permits.

Game fees will increase by $1.00 as of November 1.  Members' fees will be $8.00 and non-members $10.00.  We are a small club that struggles to meet expenses, especially during the summer months.   Through the generosity of members we have been able to purchase a new computer and other  equipment, but we cannot continue to rely on that source of funds.  We need to keep up with the rising  costs of doing business.

It is time to renew your membership.  Annual fees are $25.  If you would like a badge identifying yourself as a Bridge Deck Club of Naples member, please add $10.00.  These funds are an important source of income to help the club survive during the summer months.  A donation of $250 would enable you to become a life member.

We have a new one-year lease with the church for the use of the Parish Hall.  Due to demand from church organizations and difficulties in moving us to the Ministry Building, the lease is for five weekdays, thus eliminating Saturday games.  This has reduced our annual rent.

Marcia Reff has begun weekly Monday morning lessons on Defense Strategies.  A series of 10 beginner lessons will start on Wednesday mornings in January.

Congratulations to Marcia Reff and Syd Blum, two club members who achieved ACBL Director certification.  Last year we struggled to find directors but with Marcia and Syd joining Ellie, Wayne, Nan, Donna and Alan Walters (a former member) and Bob Parlin on standby, the club should be prepared for game days.

Arrangements for our Christmas party are just about finalized; more news on that will be forthcoming.
