December 2012 Newsletter

Happy Holidays everybody!

Lots of events and “new stuff” to talk about this month, and we would like your input on all.

The Board of Governors authorized the start of a novice game on Thursday mornings. Tentative plans call for the game to commence at 9:00 AM, preceded by a fifteen-minute “chalk talk”. Start date to be established, tentatively January 3rd. Watch your e-mails for more info.
We will soon be using electronic scoring. We hope to have it in place shortly after the New Year.  Thank you to all those who supported this project and donated funds for the purchase.
Saturday games will start on January 5th. Joy Miller will begin her lecture for the third straight year at 9:45 AM, followed by a 299er game and open game at 11:00 AM.

Other business included the authorization for the purchase of a new copier. It was noted with thanks that the current copier was donated by the Arena brothers, Jack and Andy, six years ago in memory of their father, Simon, a beloved member who passed away at 100 years old in 2006.

Nancy Trice has agreed to chair the April “Patriots Day” * Sectional. Thank you, Nancy!
* Patriots Day is a uniquely New England holiday, celebrating Paul Revere’s horseback  ride through the Massachusetts countryside on the 17th of April in 1775 crying, “The British are coming! The British are coming!
The education program is well under way:  Marcia Reff leads with the intermediate group on Mondays and Joan Coval joins the staff with Beginning Bridge on Wednesday, January 2nd.
Sadly, we must report the passing of Paul Goldman, a fixture at our club for many years. Ever the gentleman, his sportsmanship, love of the game and his wry humor will be greatly missed. Paul was 82 years old.
Congratulations to Kit Samuels and Muriel Seegers on a 74.54% game on November 28th!  Close behind, at 70.82%, were Nancy Driscoll and Janice Austerman!

Please let us know your thoughts on any or all of this.

Bridge Deck Club is a membership-owned club and relies heavily on volunteers to “pitch in” and help out when needed. Let’s all of us help to continue doing that, especially in the upcoming busy winter season.
